When the door finally opens just before closing time to reveal them hesitantly looking around, I breathe a sigh of relief. I’d been working up to this night for a long time, and I was beginning to think I’d miss my opportunity and my courage would fail me on another night. Damian had been encouraging me to be bolder, to learn to ask for what I want, to put myself first. I’ve been working on it and had decided I’d do exactly that tonight. So, when their eye caught mine and they smiled a little, I could feel the flush fill my cheeks, and my lips curled in an answering smile.

“Hi there. You’re just in time,” I said, trying not to sound too breathless.

“Oh, hi. I’m afraid it’s too close to closing time to order dinner.”

“Not at all. Come have a seat and I’ll let the cook know there’ll be one more order.” I led them to the back table they usually preferred, pulling out the chair in the corner that let them see the entire dining room and the front door. “Be right back,” I said, lightly touching their shoulder as I stepped away.

After popping into the kitchen to let the cook staff know that Damian had arrived and would be ordering dinner, I gathered a glass of ice water and a lemonade and went back to their table.

“Here you are. I’ve let the cook know and he’s on standby, ready to cook whatever you’d like.” I could hear the breathiness in my voice and silently cursed myself for a fool. If I was this worked up over taking their order, how on earth was I going to get the nerve to ask them on a date?

Damian surprised me by clasping my wrist and looking me in the eye. “Are you all right, Ellie? You seem a little out of sorts tonight.” Their expression was concerned, their voice solicitous, and their touch on my arm was intoxicating.
